Manual therapy

The Manual Therapist

A manual therapist is a physiotherapist who, after his training in general physiotherapy and rehabilitation sciences, has followed a manual therapy course. With this he has gained a deepening of knowledge about movement of the body and in particular of the spine. Due to his specialized training, the manual therapist is perfectly capable of assessing the possible causes of your neck complaints. This way he can propose a tailor-made solution for every person

Treatment effective therapy

The goal of manual therapy is to improve the functioning of the joints and to make good use of your muscles to improve your posture and movements. the manual therapist uses a number of specific techniques for this. Mobilization and manipulation are two effective methods of treatment for the relief and prevention of back and neck pain. Mobilization is an alternative treatment method for manipulation and vice versa. Mobilization can be described as applying pressure with the hand to move individual joints. Manipulating is a controlled and rapid movement of a joint, often accompanied by an “audible and/or tactile click”. mobilizations have proven to be as effective as manipulations. Effects of manual therapy are often immediately noticeable: you will feel an improvement in range of motion and a decrease in pain. The treatment program of the manual therapist also consists of giving good instructions, advice, guidance and insight into healthy movement.

Intake quickly clear

After an initial screening, your first appointment consists of two parts: an interview and a physical examination. During the conversation, the manual therapist asks questions about your complaints; for example, how they arose and when they increase or decrease. This is followed by a physical examination, during which the manual therapist assesses your posture and movements and examines the affected and adjacent joints. This will determine the possible causes of your complaints. Together with you, the manual therapist decides whether manual therapy makes sense. If that is the case, the manual therapist will discuss the approach for further treatment. This way you have clarity about the follow-up immediately after the first appointment. Manual therapists give you the right to opt out of the proposed treatment at any time.

Research prior to manipulative therapy

Prior to manipulating the neck, for example, the manual therapist will investigate whether there may be an increased risk of complications. If the manual therapist has any indication that there is an increased risk, he will completely advise against using manipulations as a form of therapy. However, the research cannot completely rule out the risks of manipulation.

Possible complications

Research shows that in very rare cases* serious complications occur after manipulation of the neck, such as damage to blood vessels with the possible risk of stroke or death. There is a small risk of damage to nerves, bones, muscles and connective tissue.
Manual therapists are trained to know where and when they can apply the technique of manipulation. They are experts in the safe and effective application of these techniques. If there is even the slightest indication that you are at risk, the manual therapist will suggest other treatment techniques such as mobilizations.

*The risk of serious complications is estimated to be between 1/50 000 to 1/5.8 million manipulations.
